Environment Design

So here are some projects I've done over the term for environment design. I'm going to post a class a day for a while. Next up will be digital painting. This term was a lot more work than the rest. O:

These are value studies from week 1. Meant to just get us warmed up. The shots are from Star Trek, Hero, and Blade Runner.

These are more value studies for the second week. Did them in order to decide what to paint for our first larger piece. I chose the left middle on the bottom page.

For the Third week, we had to make a line drawing based on our thumbnail to clean it up.

We then had to bring value back in. It also had to work without the lines.

Here's my first finished environment painting! Couldn't dwell on it too long though, so our homework was also to come up with comps for our next painting.

These are color comps of a few of the value studies that I liked. Chose the bottom left on the top page for the final one. The third pic is an attempt at photobashing. It's not really my thing. I prefer straight painting.

The top one is my rough of the painting. Bottom one is my teachers 5 min paintover. The color change wasn't on purpose, there was a loose adjustment layer that he didn't have time to find.

Here is the finished version! My favorite painting this term for this class. :)

For this assignment we had a bunch of assignments. One was to finish the painting above^ Then we had to make very quick orthos of that painting. Then we had to rough out our next painting. Ill explain whats happening in the next painting later. It's kind of a long explaination. Bottom one is my teachers paintover.

Heres the finished version. Basically what happened is the Earths magnetic field flipped. This caused terrain all around the world to go haywire. During the transition of the magnetic field the earth lost its shield against the suns radiation. Animals started mutating from exposure. I decided to make it classic 50s mutation. Giant. So humans introduced a gas into the air to serve as a temporary barrier for the radiation while they waited for the poles to realign. Long story done... It was fun but I couldn't put the amount of time I wanted to in order to make it look how I wanted.

Next up is digital painting! I'll try and get it up tomorrow. It's a lot of files to convert.
